Our story
Singularity started in a Harvard lab. Wenbo was a postdoctoral researcher studying how to make electricity grids run more cleanly, and the first real project applied that research directly: software to control a battery system, dispatching it to minimize carbon emissions. To do that, you have to know what the carbon actually is, which is harder than it sounds. Where does the electricity come from? What’s in it? What does it emit?
It turned out not to be simple at all. The data was fragmented across incompatible systems. Frameworks existed, but no two implementations agreed. The same underlying electricity, under the same framework, could produce completely different answers depending on who was doing the math. No reliable answer existed. So Singularity set out to build one.
The first product was the Grid Carbon API: public grid emissions data, accessible to any developer. It worked, and it surfaced the real problem: public data could answer broad questions about the grid, but it couldn’t tell a utility which generation was matched to a specific customer’s electricity use, or help manage the programs driving those commitments. For that, the answers had to come from inside utility and grid operator systems that had never been opened to an outside vendor.
That sent Singularity in a different direction: working directly with utilities and grid operators, starting with MISO and Southern Company, to build the data foundation from the inside. That’s the work: helping utilities and grid operators account for clean energy across every program and show every customer exactly what’s in their electricity. That platform is in production today at Southern Company, APS, Evergy, MISO, and SPP — running programs that most tools were never designed to absorb, on data sourced from the systems that actually run the grid.
